Call for Abstracts: Global Cooperative Economics (& Movements)

The editors of the forthcoming Global Cooperative Economics (and Movements) cordially invite interested scholars to contribute to this important, timely, and transdisciplinary reference work. The volume will feature around forty 3,500-7,000 word chapters that provide a broad overview of various areas of cooperative economics & management with expected publication by Q3 2025.

The volume will:

  • Provide further understanding of how communication in cooperatives plays a role in promoting their principles, values, and practices and how these are transferred across generations of cooperators.
  • Offer a broad variety of case studies on issues pertinent to cooperative economics and management, also aiming to demonstrate how different types of cooperatives can promote sustainability and self-organization in connection with development studies. The latter should answer questions on the current challenges of the digital age, including forthcoming issues of data governance, artificial intelligence, and the twin transition.
  • Support international efforts towards movement-building that many cooperatives and their apex organizations are involved in and promote understanding of the way they balance their different needs and resources depending on their form (e.g., housing, agricultural, banking, social, etc.).
  • Foster a discussion on cooperatives’ future in a rapidly changing political landscape, especially as concerns contrasting and comparing experiences in the Global North and South, as well as connecting cooperation and cooperatives with controversial topics such as migration and prison reform and/or abolition.
  • Provide a deeper and updated understanding of the intergenerational evolution within cooperatives of concepts on employment and labour as new policies are raising expectations.

Proposals should aim to appeal to a broad, international readership and to generally fit one of the following sections of the book:

  • Country overviews
    • Contributions dealing with entire country case studies. Can also be written by multiple sets of authors dealing with different aspects of a particular country.
  • Intensive or extensive studies of different types of cooperatives
    • This refers to contributions dealing intensively with a particular type of cooperative, such as social or platform cooperatives (which can be compared across countries), or ones dealing extensively with multiple types, for example comparisons of consumer and worker cooperatives, etc.
  • Cooperation in the Global North vs. South
    • Contributions dealing with either the particularities of cooperatives and/or cooperation in the Global North or South, or those offering comparisons in one domain between North and South.
  • Mutualism and Movements
    • Contributions emphasizing the interplay between principles and practices, as seen internationally towards the generation of intra- and international cooperative movement(s). Also, those profiling international cooperative and mutualist (e.g., commons) movements, prospects and challenges. Can include philosophical investigations of mutualism as an ethical or ontological value or position.
  • Education and Media
    • Contributions communicating and transmitting cooperative principles and identity, servicing the demand for cooperative education, both in cooperatives and in the curriculum, presenting interesting University-cooperative collaborations or spin-offs, etc.
  • Cooperatives and Development
    • Submissions focusing on the intersection of cooperation, inequality and development.
  • Other Topics
    • Issues of particular interest: communication, complexity and cooperation, R&D cooperation, issues of cooperation and human geography, migration, diverse economics, (prison) abolition, feminist issues, environmental sustainability and related.

Proposals will be privileged that combine multiple elements of the above sections.

Finally: we also ask those visitors to consider taking a moment to providing a mental map, reflecting your view of the cooperative world. For instance, you may feel that “community” is strongly (“5”) connected with “inclusive governace”, or “democratic participation” is moderately (“3”) connected with “transparency”, etc. The selection of concepts is yours to choose. You may find the survey here:

YOUR VIEW OF THE COOP WORLD

The results of the survey will inform the editors’ work and will contribute to a second book, a “map of the cooperative world“, as seen by researchers and practitioners.

Cooperative Greetings!
